About Jabal Akhdar

Jabal Akhdar, meaning the Green Mountain, is part of the Al Hajar Mountains range in Oman, which extends about 300 km northwest to southeast, between 50-100 (31-62 mi) inland from the Gulf of Oman coast. It is one of Oman's most spectacular areas. The highest point, Jabal Shams, is around 3000 meters high. It is the highest point in Oman and the whole of Eastern Arabia. It comprises the central section of the Al Hajar Mountains range, and is located around 150km from Muscat.

The range is mostly desert, but at higher altitudes it receives around 300 mm of precipitation annually, moist enough to allow the growth of shrubs and trees and support agriculture. It is that gives the mountains their green name. Cool summer provide the visitor with fresh air surrounded by breathtaking stones. The area is about 2 hours drive from Nizwa and is famous for its traditional rose water extraction and agricultural products including pomegranate, apricot, peach and walnut. The Jabal is mostly inhabited by the Ancient Arab tribe Bani Riyam. Most descendants of the tribe are now in nearby towns such as Nizwa and Izki; some inhabit Ibra.

Visit Diana Point, view the village surround by the mountain with green plants. Off to the village of Wadi Bani Habib, where they growth different fruit plantation like cherry, peach flowers, pomegranate and saffron create an amazing palette of colors and scent throughout the year. The area is also famed for its abundance of roses which are used for rose water, perfumes and flavor.

Jabal Shams is a mountain located in Northeastern Oman north of Al Hamra town. It is the highest mountain of the It is a popular sightseeing area located 240km from Muscat. In the summer, temperature is around 20 degrees Centigrade and in the winter it drops to less than 0 degrees.

The Jabal Shams true highest point is the North Summit occupied by a military base and is a restricted area. It is measured at 3009m.

Jabal Shams has a second summit, the South Summit, which is publicly accessible for trekking via the W4 trail marked by Ministry of Tourism, Oman. The elevation of the second summit 2997m.

Drive North side way through the mountains towards the Batinah plain and visit the village of Bilad Sayt, a mountain village set on a stunning point of view and cross through Wadi Bani Awf, a beautiful wadi with plenty of spots for great pictures. Head off to Wadi Ghul, a spectacular deep canyon in the mountain range out of which rises Jabel Shams, the highest pick in Oman at over 3,000m. Jabel Shams, the mountain of the sun, is home to weavers of heavy woollen rugs in distinctive red, black and brown geometric designs. Along the steep and windy road leading to the top of the mountain, you will discover small villages hiding within the mountains rocks and then reach the incredible Grand Canyon, where you can enjoy a walk in the cool atmosphere of the mountain.
